Vita
Silvia Christoph has been a successful illustrator for over thirty
years. Born in Berlin-Neukölln, Germany in October, 1950 it seems she
was destined to become an artist. As a child her favorite toys were paper
and pencils, ink and crayons. Drawing and music were Silvia’s favorite
classes in school. After leaving secondary school Ms. Christoph attended university
at the Hdk Berlin, which was then called the "Akademie für Grafik,
Druck und Werbung" (Academy of Graphic, Print and Advertising). She graduated
with a diploma in graphic design. While attending university Silvia began
using an airbrush for the first time and designed a number of commercially
released record covers and band posters. At the same time she continued her
education at the Pedagogic Hochschule (College) in Berlin with the intention
of getting a degree in teaching music. Her studies were interrupted, however,
when she was hired at the Procom Advertising Agency.
Silvia’s employment at Procom was only the beginning. The three quarters
of a year that she spent there remains the only time she has been an employee
for a single company. Subsequently Silvia Christoph’s talent in illustration
lead to projects for many firms, including the APunktMPunkt graphic design
company and the GKM Agency. Silvia created video and record covers, storyboards
for various production companies, motion picture advertising for film distributers
and posters for concert promoters. She also illustrated projects for the Berlin
municipal government (Senate), Berliner Kindl Brewery, Bravo teen magazine,
the Ferrero Candy Company, and designed window displays for the German candy
store chain Hussel, among other assignments.
In 1990 Silvia brought her work to the Ullstein Literary Agency and immediately
received a contract for ten titles. Since then she has worked for book publishers.
Ullstein offered her many kinds of projects. She was asked to draw anything
a book title required. This eventually included illustrations for children’s
books.
Although Silvia has mastered the latest digital applications required for
todays demanding jobs, most current projects are developed on a touch screen
monitor, during her career she has had the pleasure of employing many different
styles and technics and is known as an artistic chameleon. “I love working
with anything that can be used to create a picture.”
Materials and tools Silvia has used are:
Air brush, markers, magic ink, crayon, watercolor, wall paint, acrylic, Guasche,
chalk, fine liners, brushpen, brush, electric eraser, scalpel and mask foil,
oil colors, metallic pigments, sponges, paper, colored paper, cardboard, screens,
window blinds, paper towels, collage materials, cameras.
